Recently there was a company in Austin Texas teamed up with the Texas Military Department to make a 3,800 square foot barracks. This barracks was entirely constructed using 3D printing. It used ICON technology which prints out 5 to 10 inches of concrete per second. The Small Business Innovation Research Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI) created this project with Logan Architecture planning and executing the barracks with Fort Structures handling all of the structural engineering with the military barracks.

Key Takeaways:

  • ICON with the TMD stated that it would be building the larges 3D printed structure in the United States.
  • The system used is called Vulcan Construction which prints out small pieces of concrete.
  • The project was the direct result of STRATFI small business fund.

“3D printing is taking off around the world as it continues to be used on larger projects.”
